Denver Broncos Odds -500
Looking at the current odds to win the AFC West in 2013 it appears to be a one-horse race with the Broncos leading the charge. This should come as no big surprise considering that Denver ran away with the division last season with an AFC-best record of 13-3 while the other three teams ended the year with a losing record.
Denver is actually in great position to be even better in 2013. Peyton Manning is one more season removed from his past neck surgery and the addition of wide receiver Wes Welker as a free agent from New England gives him another huge target in an already potent passing attack.
Throw in the fact that the Broncos’ defense was ranked second in the NFL overall and this race is pretty much over even before it started.
Kansas City Chiefs Odds +650
It did not take long for former Philadelphia coach Andy Reid to find a new home after he was fired from his old team. He will now try and work the same magic in Kansas City that took the Eagles to five NFC Championship Games in his 14-year tenure. The Chiefs really have nowhere to go but up after winning just two games last year.
This is a team that still has quite a bit of talent with a number of Pro Bowl players on the roster so a .500 record or better is not completely out of the question. The big question will be how well quarterback Alex Smith will perform after coming over from San Francisco in a trade?
San Diego Chargers Odds +650
The Chargers ruled the AFC West for a number of years but they have recently fallen on harder times with three-straight seasons out of the playoffs. Last year’s 7-9 record cost Norv Turner his job so it will now be up to new head coach Mike McCoy to right the ship.
San Diego still has Philip Rivers under center but much of the supporting cast from all those postseason appearances is gone. The offense ended 2012 ranked 31st in the NFL overall and was equally as bad at passing and running the ball. The one ray of hope is a defense that was ranked sixth against the run and ninth in total yards allowed.
Oakland Raiders Odds +2000
After a couple of false starts with back-to-back 8-8 records in 2010 and 2011, the Raiders tool a major step backwards last season with just four wins. They are now back in a rebuilding mode under new head coach Dennis Allen.
Oakland is hoping that Matt Flynn still has what it takes to be a starting quarterback in the NFL but the addition of Tyler Wilson through the draft could come into play if Flynn struggles in the role.
The Raiders definitely added some youth to the lineup with a total of 10 draft picks including cornerback DJ Hayden with the 12th overall pick.
